Summary

Replace the flat per-wallet Arena buy cooldown with a buy-energy charge model that preserves the current long-run pacing budget while allowing short burst sessions.

Proposed mechanic:

  • Each wallet earns 1 buy charge every 5 minutes.
  • Charges cap at 5.
  • Each successful buy spends 1 charge.
  • A short burst cooldown, initially 15 seconds, applies between charge-spending buys.
  • If a wallet has no charges, the next buy is blocked until the next charge accrues.

This is intended to support GitLab #331's goal of fun, clear UX that can be played in short bursts throughout the day without turning Arena buys into unrestricted spam.

Current Codebase

Arena v2 currently uses a flat per-wallet buy cooldown:

  • docs/product/primitives.md documents buyCooldownSec with production default 300 seconds and nextBuyAllowedAt[buyer] = block.timestamp + buyCooldownSec.
  • contracts/src/arena/TimeArena.sol enforces buy pacing during buy flows.
  • contracts/script/DeployDevBuyCooldown.sol, contracts/script/DeployDev.s.sol, and contracts/script/DeployProduction.s.sol configure dev and production cooldown behavior.
  • frontend/src/lib/indexerApi.ts and Arena timer/session hooks expose cooldown-adjacent sale-head data to the play UI.
  • frontend/src/pages/arena/ArenaSimplePage.tsx owns the main play route and buy panel UX.
  • indexer/src/api_arena.rs, indexer/src/chain_timer.rs, and related API structs expose Arena timer and sale-head fields.
  • simulations/timecurve_sim/model.py and simulations/tests/test_ecostrategy.py model cooldown effects and already test that longer cooldowns reduce buys.
  • Audits note that the current per-wallet cooldown slows honest single-wallet repeat buys but does not constrain multi-wallet operators.

Why This Is Needed

The flat 5-minute cooldown is useful anti-spam, but it conflicts with short-session play:

  • A returning player may only get one meaningful buy action before being blocked.
  • A shorter flat cooldown mostly benefits users who stay online continuously.
  • A charge model lets casual players accumulate a small session budget while preserving the same average rate over time.
  • The 15-second burst gap keeps buy effects legible and limits machine-gun transaction spam.

This should improve the primary play loop without discarding the original pacing intent.

Constraints And Guardrails

  • Preserve onchain authority. Buy availability must be enforced in TimeArena, not only in the frontend or indexer.
  • Keep long-run default pacing equivalent to today's production setting: 1 buy per 5 minutes per wallet.
  • Keep charges bounded. Proposed cap is 5.
  • Keep a short anti-spam gap between charge spends. Proposed default is 15 seconds and must be greater than zero.
  • Do not weaken DOUB ingress balance-delta parity or Arena v2 prize routing invariants.
  • Do not change 100% podium buy routing from #300.
  • Treat sybil bypass as expected permissionless behavior and test it explicitly; do not claim this is sybil resistance.
  • Preserve local/dev ability to shorten pacing for QA, but make parameter names clear enough that production deploys cannot accidentally disable pacing.
  • Indexer and frontend must display derived state only; they must not become authoritative for charge availability.
  • UX should frame this positively as available moves/charges, not as a punitive cooldown wall.

Implement a BuyEnergy or equivalent onchain state model:

struct BuyEnergy {
    uint8 charges;
    uint40 lastRefillAt;
    uint40 lastBuyAt;
}

Suggested parameters:

  • buyChargeIntervalSec = 300
  • maxBuyCharges = 5
  • burstBuyCooldownSec = 15

On each buy:

  1. Refill wallet charges from elapsed time since lastRefillAt.
  2. Clamp to maxBuyCharges.
  3. Preserve partial interval progress if the wallet is not capped.
  4. Require at least one charge.
  5. Require block.timestamp >= lastBuyAt + burstBuyCooldownSec.
  6. Spend one charge.
  7. Continue existing buy flow: DOUB pull, CHARM/XP/CRED, podium timer effects, WarBow hooks, event emission, routing.

Expose enough read data for UX:

  • Current charges.
  • Max charges.
  • Charge interval.
  • Burst cooldown.
  • Next charge timestamp.
  • Next buy allowed timestamp.

Prefer a dedicated view function on TimeArena for wallet buy-energy state so frontend/indexer logic does not duplicate refill math incorrectly.

Frontend direction:

  • Show charge pips or compact "moves available" state near the buy CTA.
  • Show "next move in MM:SS" only when out of charges or inside the 15-second burst gap.
  • Disable buy submit with a precise reason when blocked.
  • Preserve clear post-buy feedback for the charge spent and next available move.

Indexer direction:

  • Add sale-head parameters for charge interval/cap/burst cooldown.
  • If wallet-specific charge state is served, mark it derived from onchain reads and include read block metadata.
  • Keep browser display indexer-first when VITE_INDEXER_URL is set per #301.

Simulation direction:

  • Compare flat 300-second cooldown vs 5-charge/15-second burst model.
  • Include single-wallet casual users, continuous active users, and sybil operators split across 1, 5, 25, and 100 wallets.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Production default behavior allows up to 5 stored buys after at least 25 minutes idle, then one buy every 15 seconds until charges are spent.
  • Long-run average remains 1 buy per 5 minutes per wallet after the stored charges are exhausted.
  • A wallet with 0 charges cannot buy until the next charge accrues.
  • A wallet with charges cannot buy again inside the 15-second burst cooldown.
  • Existing buy side effects remain intact: CHARM accounting, XP/level events, CRED handling, referrals, podium timer updates, WarBow scoring/hooks, DOUB routing, and event emission.
  • Dev deploys still support dense QA with intentionally short parameters.
  • Frontend displays charge state, next allowed buy state, and actionable blocked reasons.
  • Indexer/API exposes or supports all data needed for the frontend without making offchain state authoritative.
  • Docs and invariant maps are updated from flat cooldown language to buy-energy language.

Test Plan: Normal And Edge Paths

Contracts:

  • Unit test initial charge state for a new wallet.
  • Buy succeeds with available charge.
  • Buy spends exactly one charge.
  • Second buy inside 15 seconds reverts with a clear error.
  • Second buy after 15 seconds succeeds if another charge remains.
  • Charges refill by exactly one after 300 seconds.
  • Charges cap at 5 after long idle time.
  • Partial interval progress is preserved correctly across buys/refills.
  • Wallet at 0 charges reverts until next charge accrues.
  • Boundary tests at exactly 15 seconds and exactly 300 seconds.
  • Fuzz elapsed seconds, current charges, and repeated buys to prove charges never exceed cap and never underflow.
  • Existing TimeArena buy tests continue to pass.

Indexer/API:

  • Integration test sale-head includes charge interval, cap, and burst cooldown fields.
  • If wallet charge state endpoint/field is added, test initial, partially refilled, capped, and exhausted states.
  • Test read-block metadata and stale indexer behavior are explicit.

Frontend:

  • Unit test charge display for 0/5, partial, and full states.
  • Unit test buy button disabled reasons for no charges and burst cooldown.
  • Unit test countdown formatting for next charge and next buy.
  • E2E happy path: returning wallet has charges, buys, sees charge decrement and post-buy feedback.
  • E2E sad path: attempts immediate second buy and sees 15-second blocked state.
  • E2E out-of-charges path: spends available charges, then sees next recharge timer.

Simulation:

  • Compare current 300-second flat cooldown to buy-energy model across equivalent traffic assumptions.
  • Report buy count, spend share, CHARM share, podium share, WarBow BP share, and value returned by cohort.

Attack, Hack, And Abuse Test Plan

  • Sybil packs: model 1, 5, 25, and 100 wallets controlled by one operator with the same total capital.
  • Transaction-count farming: test whether bursting increases per-buy XP/BP/reward extraction beyond intended spend-weighted value.
  • Boundary sniping: test buys at exact 15-second and 300-second boundaries, including same-block ordering where possible.
  • Timestamp manipulation: fuzz small timestamp skews around refill and burst boundaries.
  • Reentrancy/regression: ensure charge spend occurs before any external token transfer path in a way that cannot be reused by a malicious token callback; preserve existing reentrancy assumptions.
  • Router/buyFor behavior: verify charges are keyed to the actual credited buyer, not the router or payer, matching current cooldown intent.
  • Bot bursts: use local Anvil/bot swarm to confirm indexer and UI remain legible during stored-charge bursts.
  • Gas griefing: measure gas for refill math on capped and uncapped wallets; ensure no unbounded loops over elapsed intervals.
  • Parameter abuse: deploy script tests reject zero interval, zero max charges, and zero burst cooldown unless a dev-only override intentionally permits dense QA.

Verification Criteria

Minimum merge verification should include:

  • cd contracts && forge test
  • cd indexer && cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings && cargo test
  • cd frontend && npm run typecheck && npm run lint && npm test
  • bash scripts/verify-podium-live-anvil.sh or a new focused verify-buy-energy-anvil.sh
  • Simulation test run covering current cooldown vs buy-energy model
  • Manual QA screenshot or short recording showing charge pips, one successful burst buy, one 15-second blocked state, and one out-of-charges state on desktop and mobile

MR checklist must include one row per touched layer: item, command, PASS/FAIL.
